The Figure

What the dead man last saw

Christian was the gifted one — eight years younger than Durman, drawn upward from childhood by a born feel for shuttles and orbital modules until merit alone made him one of Guilord Messagala’s personal pilots. When the Guilord’s craft went down, Christian went down with the official record: presumed dead, case closed.

He was not dead. Freed of his Unifol chip by the hacker Cicuta, Christian carries what the dead man last saw — the truth of Thomas Kramer’s project and the fate of the Guilords. Chaos creates opportunity, he says, and he found access where the world saw only a grave.

Function

Former personal pilot to Guilord Ostan Messagala; officially a casualty of the crash. Actually the one witness who survived to remember it.

The survival

Presumed dead is a useful condition. It let Christian move through the world as a man no one was looking for.

The inheritance

He holds what Messagala died refusing to give up — access to Kramer’s project, and the secret that makes his half-brother a target too.

“Chaos creates opportunity.”
