The first thing anyone notices is the pattern: parallel lines of branches, nodes, and traces running from the crown of her head down across her shoulders, like a circuit board grown into the body. The palest skin, no hair, large and pensive eyes. The markings lend her an almost extraterrestrial character and suggest a long, easy familiarity with technical systems.
But the data she reviews follows no visible logic of motion or mechanics. The tables on her tablet advance only when she allows them to. Comprehension, in her hands, looks like patience. She watches a desert drowned in fog through a porthole and asks the question no one on the manifest is supposed to ask aloud: when was the last time these sands saw the sun?
Carried on the manifest as a researcher attached to the relocation effort. Her actual value to the mission is harder to file: she does not operate the discovery so much as listen to it, and the people who authorized her presence are not certain they understand what that means.
Where the Krubelirium presents to others as interference, to Zara it presents as a signal with intent. This is the fuse of the book. Her curiosity is not a character trait the plot tolerates; it is the mechanism the plot runs on.
The Preceptorium's instruments can audit a maintenance record or a trajectory tolerance. They cannot audit attention. The thing they most need to control about Zara is the one thing she does silently.

Pragmatic where she is driven. They meet just before boarding, and leave bound to the same secret.
The Preceptorium made flesh. Everything Zara notices is everything he needs unnoticed.
