Zara's companion in the fog

One of the strange, vivid creatures of the fog-bound world — companion and foil to Zara as she moves through territory no map prepares her for. Part of the menagerie that gives the novel its restless, off-world life.

The Figure

A creature of the in-between

Gaag Zorb belongs to the part of the book where the familiar falls away and the fog world asserts its own logic. A companion to Zara through that strangeness, Gaag is one of the vivid non-human presences that keep the novel from ever settling into the merely human.

Around the rescued child Akhai, Gaag is part of the fragile circle of protection that forms in the fog. In a story full of grand powers and engineered minds, this is the smaller, stranger company that keeps Zara company at ground level.

A creature of the fog world, outside any human taxonomy. The kind of presence that makes the map feel small.

Role

Companion and foil to Zara through the unmapped country — one of the figures that keeps her tethered when nothing else is familiar.

The circle

Near the child Akhai, Gaag is part of the makeshift shelter that forms in the fog — protection improvised out of strangers and strangeness.

A vivid presence from the menagerie of the fog — company at the edge of the map.
