The Figure

The warden at the bottom of the cold

Tumiya Naab rules the Kruciferous Casemate, a bunker-prison southeast of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago where the air itself can kill and the cold sits at a hundred and twenty below. He is grotesque and authoritarian in equal measure — the kind of man a place like this produces and then deserves.

Naab resents the world above that sends him its problems. Free people don’t belong here, he keeps telling himself — so why the hell did they send you? His bitterness is the only warmth in the building, and he guards it jealously, with his assistant Gubo trailing the paperwork behind him.

Function

Chief Warden of the Kruciferous Casemate. The absolute authority of a place designed so that no authority above ever has to look at it.

The cold

A hundred and twenty below outside; cryolysis for the condemned. Naab administers a prison where the environment does most of the punishing.

The resentment

He despises the free people sent down to him. That contempt is the one thing in the bunker that has never frozen.

“What kind of fevered imagination created this?”
