Jett Kowalski

Chief Mechanic of the Typhon

Chief mechanic of the Typhon and the hand that catches what falls out of the sky. He talks Zara down through an air-cannon pickup with the easy patience of a man who has done impossible retrievals before, and there's a strange warmth in how he speaks to the ship's android.

The Figure

The hand that catches what falls

Jett Kowalski is the Typhon’s chief mechanic, which on this ship means he is also the one who fishes people out of the fog. He talks Zara through her air-cannon pickup — cross your arms, bend your knees, feel the jolt — with the calm of someone who trusts his machines because he is the one who maintains them.

Under the grease and the banter he is the warmest of the crew. He scolds and jokes with Porter, throws orders at Fitz, and speaks to Vikki the android with a tenderness he doesn’t bother to hide. When he calls Zara aboard, the welcome is real.

Function

Chief mechanic of the Typhon; de facto rescue hand. The man who turns a falling body into a recovered passenger.

The warmth

Gruff on the surface, but the tone he takes with Vikki gives him away. He treats the android as crew, not equipment.

The crew

Jett is the connective tissue — between Porter’s rigor, Fitz’s galley, and the captain’s grief. Take him out and the Typhon stops feeling like a home.

“I hope your cannon works properly!”
